What is Pitch Circle Diameter (PCD)?
The better you can inspect and maintain your wheels, the less likely a loosened wheel nut will lead to detachment. One of the key things to know is how to measure PCD of your wheel. This stands for Pitch Circle Diameter - the diameter of the circle that the wheel studs form. Knowing how to calculate it can help you find the right safety equipment for when you're on the road.
How do you work out Pitch Circle Diameter?
Measure the distance between two adjacent studs. Measure from the centre of the stud and mark down your measurement. This applies whether you have four, five, or six studs to measure between. Once you have the measurement between two studs, you can then work out the measurements. In the below formulas, the measurement between two studs is indicated by the letter “S.”
Formula for 4 Stud:
S / 0.7071 = PCD
Formula for 5 Stud:
S / 0.5878 = PCD
Formula for 6 Stud:
S / 0.5 = PCD
You need these measurements to help purchase replacement wheels. You also need them to choose the correct Wheel Sentry® wheel nut indicators. Wheel nut indicators help to maintain the integrity of wheel nuts, guarding against wheel detachment.
