A Guide: Inspecting and Adjusting Knott Trailer Brakes

Friday 21st July 2023

Trailer brakes are an essential component of any trailer, and to ensure optimal performance and safety it is essential that they are regularly maintained and checked. Among the various makes of trailer brakes available, Knott brakes are widely used and known for their reliability and durability. In this blog post, we will provide you with a step-by-step guide to inspecting and adjusting your Knott trailer brakes.

Step 1: Gather the Necessary Tools and Equipment

Before you begin, gather the following tools and equipment to assist you during the inspection and adjustment process:

  1. Trailer lift (click here to view online)
  2. Lug wrench
  3. Adjustable wrench or socket set
  4. Brake cleaner or degreaser
  5. Brake adjustment tool
  6. Safety goggles and gloves

Step 2: Secure Your Trailer

Make sure that your trailer is secure, and the trailer lift is on level ground before lifting the trailer. Remember to apply the handbrake lever on the trailer. When loosening the wheel nuts, make sure you loosen them before raising the trailer or jacking it from the ground, because, if you have auto-reverse brakes fitted, the wheel will try to revolve backwards. Once they are loose, then you can jack your trailer fully off the ground.

Step 3: Remove the Wheels

Now that the trailer is in the air, you can completely remove the wheel nuts and take the wheel and tyre off. After you’ve removed the wheel and tyre, you will need to also remove the drum from off the axle so that you can see the brakes.

Step 4: Inspect the Brake Components

With the wheels removed, you will have a clear view of the brake components. Begin by inspecting the brakes for any signs of excessive wear, damage, or corrosion.

Step 5: Clean the Brake Components

Using a brake cleaner or degreaser, thoroughly clean the brake components. This will help remove any dirt, debris, or brake dust that may affect their performance. Ensure you follow the instructions provided with the cleaner and take appropriate safety precautions.

Step 6: Adjust the Brake Shoes

Knott trailer brakes can sometimes feature a self-adjusting mechanism that automatically adjusts the brake shoes as needed.  Although self-adjusting it is still important to inspect the shoes in a similar manner.
To adjust the brakes, you will need to refit the brake drum to the axle again before you continue. Locate the brake adjustment mechanism on the backside of the brake assembly. Using a socket wrench or spanner, tighten the adjuster bolt until the brake drum completely locks up and can’t be moved.  Once you have done this, now back off the bolt until the drum can spin freely but with a very slight rubbing sound of the shoes. Repeat this process for each brake assembly on your trailer.

Step 7: Reassemble and Test

Once you have inspected and adjusted all the brake assemblies, it's time to reassemble the wheels. Place the wheels back onto the trailer's hub and hand-tighten the nuts. Lower the trailer using the jack until the wheels make contact with the ground. Then, use a lug wrench to tighten the lug nuts securely.

Finally, perform a brake test in a safe and open area. Apply the trailer's brakes and ensure that they engage smoothly and bring the trailer to a controlled stop without any pulling or uneven braking. If you notice any issues, repeat the adjustment process, or consult a professional for further assistance.

Regular inspection and adjustment of your Knott trailer brakes is crucial for maintaining their effectiveness and ensuring your safety on the road. Remember, if you're ever unsure or encounter any difficulties during the process, it's always recommended to consult a professional or a trusted mechanic to ensure the job is done correctly.
